George Spicer Newsletter - 25th April 2025
Welcome to the summer term at George Spicer Primary School! We're excited to have your children back and ready for a term filled with fun, learning, and enriching experiences.
As the weather (hopefully) improves, we have a jam-packed schedule of activities and events planned for the coming weeks. From parent workshops to sports days and school trips, there's something for everyone to look forward to. We encourage you all to get involved and support your children in these engaging opportunities.
This half-term, our school value is Equality. We will be exploring this theme through our assemblies and PSHE lessons, encouraging our pupils to celebrate diversity and demonstrate respect for all members of our community. I encourage you to discuss this value with your children and ask them about the ways we've challenged them to consider their role in promoting equality.
In our assembly this week, we also celebrated Earth Day and its theme of 'Our Power Our Planet'. The children were encouraged to think about simple ways they can help care for our environment, such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and being mindful of their impact. I'd love to hear from your children about the ideas they shared!
Finally, a friendly reminder to the Yellows and Greens (try your best to win this term) - but for all children to keep up the great work on the Housepoint Challenge! We can't wait to see which house will come out on top this term.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or the school office. We're here to support you and your family.
Here's to a wonderful summer term!

We are excited to announce that we are, once again, having the Travelling Books, book fair here at George Spicer! There will be a stand at both Sketty Road, main playground and Kimberley Gardens, Reception playground. The fair is open at the end of the school day. This is a cashless event and so payment will be accepted either via the QR code, which will be displayed at the event or by contactless payment.
All the books are 3 for 2, with the cheapest book being free. Stationery and hand pointers are not included in the 3 for 2 deal.
Every item that you buy, not only supports your child with their reading but also raises funds for us to buy more books for the school.
We look forward to seeing you and your children there!

Reception
Reception have loved cooking up all kinds of delicious concoctions in our new mud kitchen this week! We used our senses to explore textures that we found in nature and experimented by adding water to see how the consistency of the soil changed. A child from Primrose class said “I’m making chicken and rice, I have that for dinner at home” a child from Daffodil class said “I think we should make chocolate cake and ice cream for dessert!”
We then recorded our recipes and applied our phonics skills to write what we had made.

On Friday we invited our families to our Reception family reading morning, which will be happening every Friday this half-term. We enjoyed sharing our favourite stories and playing reading games in our classroom. One of our parents shared that they "loved seeing the children engaging in reading at school and that we make reading fun!" We look forward to next week's reading morning too!

Year 1
This week in Year 1 we have been looking at equal groups and making equal groups. We have learnt new vocabulary such as: groups of, equal, same, and multiples. The children have been working outside to make equal groups with natural objects, using bugs and counters inside to make equal groups and are able to explain why a group may not be equal.

Year 2
In Geography, Year 2 have been learning about human features and physical features. As part of our unit last term, we completed field work in the local area. We asked, 'How much litter can we see?' We completed tally charts on a walk along Sketty Road, Ladysmith Road and through the playing fields. Year 2 were shocked at the amount of litter they saw, some children tallying over 50 pieces just on the park pathway. The children stated that dropping litter is bad for the environment and that they would like Enfield to be much cleaner. You can support this at home by always finding a bin for your litter or taking litter with you.

As part of our Time to Shine assembly on the last day of term, we had a very special performance from the choir from Years 3, 4 and 5. The children were brilliant; singing and signing the words to two special songs.

Year 3
Year 3 enjoyed being apprentice tea tasters this week! To help kick off their introduction to their new text - Cloud Tea Monkeys by Mal Peet and Elspeth Graham, to help inspire their writing, they got to try different types of tea. They had to predict the names of each tea and use their senses to describe the taste and aroma. Over the course of the term they will also develop their knowledge of the history of tea!
The children have also been working hard in science where they have been learning about the human skeleton, the different names of bones and the purpose of muscles and joints.

Year 4
This week, Year 4 have taken on the powerful role of change-makers as they begin writing persuasive letters to the CEO of BP. Inspired by their learning about the Deep Water Horizon oil spill of 2010 and its devastating impact on marine life, the children are passionately urging BP to take greater care in preventing future environmental disasters.
They’ve been exploring the power of modal verbs, crafting strong, impactful statements, and weaving in emotive language to strengthen their arguments. It has been inspiring to see how deeply they care about protecting our oceans—and how confidently they are using their voices to advocate for change. 🌍💙
We’re incredibly proud of their thoughtful writing and heartfelt conviction. Watch this space—Year 4 are definitely the ones to watch!

Also, as part of their Religious World Views topic on the Hindu faith, Year 4 visited the Nagapooshani Ambaal Temple in Edmonton just before the Easter break. The children showed wonderful respect both during the journey and while inside the temple, and we were incredibly proud of their behaviour throughout.
They listened with great focus, took in the beauty and significance of the space, and asked thoughtful, curious questions that reflected their growing understanding of Hindu beliefs and traditions. It was a meaningful and memorable experience for all!

Year 5
To cap off and finish a fantastic Spring Term, Year 5 were lucky enough to have a representative from the local fire brigade come and give us a talk about fire safety. We learned how to keep ourselves and others safe to prevent the likelihood of a fire breaking out and what to do in the event of a fire. The children listened intently and asked a range of insightful questions.

The children have been getting stuck into our current Writing topic - The Whale, by Ethan and Vita Murrow. We have created emotive freeze-frames for specific scenes within the story and began writing recounts that include shifts in formality and tone as well as abstract noun phrases and interjections. Year 5 have enjoyed exploring this picture book, gaining plenty of wonderful ideas and inspiration from the book's atmospheric black and white sketches.

Year 6 Netball Tournament – A Day to Remember!
Thursday 24th April: Broomfield Park, Palmers Green
On Thursday 24th April, nine enthusiastic Year 6 pupils proudly represented our school at a borough-wide netball tournament held at Broomfield Park. After finishing third out of eight teams in a series of competitive league matches earlier in the season, the team was eager to take on this exciting challenge.
Despite a long Easter break, the team hit the ground running. In our opening game, we made a fantastic start, scoring two quick goals and holding our lead to win 2-0. It was a confident and energetic performance that set the tone for the day.
The next two matches were tougher, as we came up against strong, well-organised opponents. Although we were narrowly defeated in both games, the team showed great spirit, determination and a willingness to learn from each experience.
That resilience paid off in our fourth game. The team bounced back brilliantly, taking a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime. Although the opposition mounted a strong comeback to eventually win 4-3, our players showed courage and teamwork throughout.
In true champion style, we ended the tournament on a high. In our final match, we took control from the outset and delivered a confident 5-2 victory, finishing the day with smiles and a real sense of pride.
Both Mrs McManus and I were incredibly proud of every single player. They represented the school with enthusiasm, teamwork and sportsmanship. Several members of staff from other schools even took the time to commend our pupils on their kindness and respectfulness – both on the bus and on the court.
Well done to Byron, James, Harry, Aisha, Darcy, Hodo, Jess, Olivia, and Emilia – you are a credit to George Spicer!
