Reception School Admissions - If you have a child born between 1 September 2018 and 31 August 2019, you will need to apply for a primary school place by 15 January 2023.

Churchbury School Photos - Children’s photographs are now available to purchase online.  Parents have until 1st December to order online, you can choose either free delivery to school or a direct home delivery for a small fee.

Please note the dates for each payment: £95 on 30^th July 2022, £95 on 30^th September 2022, £95 on 30^th November 2022 and £95 on 10^th February 2023.

FoGs Winter Wonderland parking - We expect a big turnout at the FoGs Winter Wonderland event this Sunday.  Please try to use sustainable transport to get to the event.  For those families who need to drive please park responsibly and respectfully.  Please avoid parking on the nearby residential roads and park in one of the Park and Stride car parks. Park and stride map

School Streets ONE WAY SYSTEM OPERATIONAL

Click on the link One way streets for a letter from the council which was sent to you earlier this term, describing planned extension works for our operational School Street.  Please be aware that this work has now taken place and the following roads are now ONE WAY; 

• Kimberley Gardens and Mafeking Road cannot be accessed from Southbury Road.  Entry is via Sketty Road only.

• Craddock Road can only be accessed via Southbury Road and is NO ENTRY from Sketty Road.  If you park in the staff car park please be aware of this change!  You will need to turn left or right and drive along Sketty Road to get to Southbury Road.  If you are doing this during the times the School Street is operational then you will be at risk of receiving a fine.

Reception Class

During our PSHE lessons, we have been discussing how to be a kind friend. We read the story of the dog and the dolphin, in this story a dog is feeling lonely at the beach until he finds a dolphin to play with! We came up with lots of ideas on how to be kind to someone if they are feeling lonely - 'we can say do you want to play with me' or 'are you okay?' or 'do you want some snacks?'. In our continuous provision, we practised asking others to play with us and looking out for our friends. We also made lots of heart shaped cards to give to our friends. Reception have been working really hard to ensure that they are kind to all the adults and children! 

Year 1

Last week Year 1 wrote an explanation text to describe the hibernation process of a dormouse. We included time adverbials to help structure our writing. Here is Deniz's writing! 

This week, we are writing a narrative using the pictures from the book 'Once upon a snowstorm' as a stimulus. We had lots of fun doing some role play and rehearsing story language. Here are our pictures. Can you tell a story using these pictures?

In Maths we are solving addition worded problems. To do this, we underline the key information in the question, write the number sentence then solve the question.  Georgia made up her own worded problem. She said, "I went to the shop to buy some cupcakes. I got 7, then I took 9 more. How many do I have altogether?"

Year 2

This week we have been learning all about Sacagawea and how she helped Lewis and Clarke with their expedition across the USA in 1805.  This inspired us to learn about how the Native American’s hunt and wrote as if we were Sacagawea in pursuit of her prey!  The children wrote some lovely descriptions of her stalking a buffalo.  We have also been learning about money this week during our maths lessons, particularly focussing on how to make different amounts using a range of coins.

  

Year 3 

In Geography this week, Year 3 have been exploring different climates.

We first ensured that we knew the difference between weather and climate. We then began discussing a climate in our own classroom before being rotated to another class to discuss the next one. The 4 climates were Polar, Temperate, Dry and Tropical. 

The children enjoyed learning about how each climate is different. They also made notes on the animals living in the climates and the features that enable them to survive. 

 

Year 5 

Computing

To finish their Year 5 unit on Programming Music, Year 5 were given a brief to create a Space theme soundtrack using Scratch. The children first created a mind map on what Space meant to them and discussed what types of pitch, tempo, volume and instruments would symbolise space. We then spoke about how we could autotune our voices and include this in our soundtracks to make our soundtracks engaging for our audience. The children worked superbly and learnt how to include a live loop and explain its function.

 

Geography - Digimaps

Some of the Year 5 classes started this week using Digimap for Schools, an online interactive atlas, comparing England and Mongolia! The children showed tremendous curiosity and were fascinated about the world around them! We began by searching our school postcode and looking at Southbury Road and familiarising ourselves using a key and looking at different overlays, such as climate, biomes, lines of longitude and latitude. We then compared London to the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar and discussed the similarities and differences, looking at physical features and topographical features of both areas. We then added map overlays to the world map, to look at population density and tectonic plates boundaries, which will support us with our learning of earthquakes in the coming weeks.

Year 6 

Exploring Rivers

Continuing on from our learning in Year 4, we explored rivers in Geography this week. We began by recapping the course of a river and noting the three main stages (Upper, Middle and Lower courses). 

We then began learning about the Congo River. Did you know it was the deepest river in the world? We discussed how the river has helped shape the Human Geography of the country and the impact this has had on population. Once we knew a bit about the Congo River, we compared it to the River Thames as well as the River Nile, which we learnt about in our Egyptian topic in Year 5. 

We compared different features of the river such as:

•  Wildlife in and around the river 
•  Length and depth 
• Climate
• Population
• Potential for Hydropower
• Transport and Trade
• River's suitability for drinking water

We also discussed how we can link this to Global Goals. 

We discussed that due to the fast flow of the Congo, if it was used for hydropower, the electricity it could produce could power sub-Saharan Africa.

Once we had become the "River Experts" that we are now, we decided to help a variety of people decide which river they should relocate to. Reading different scenarios, we discussed which river would be the best for someone to live near and why. We also discussed why the other two rivers would not be suitable for that person.

TikTok has now raised its Livestreaming Age Requirement to 18 (BBC News)  
TikTok has frequently been called out for its glaring failures to protect under 18s which use its service. With its flashy images, easily digestible content and ‘childlike’ feel it has always been popular among school aged children. A fact which has made its safeguarding failures all the more worrying. The platform’s attempt to ban under 18s seems to be unfeasible however, and so it is as important as ever to be aware of its usage in the classroom. In particular, its gift function can easily be manipulated in order to commit criminal acts against children. As such wariness around the app should not be lowered as a result.
