Parents’ Consultation evening meetings - Parents' Consultation evening meeting is now open to parents/carers to book an appointment. To book please click  https://georgespicer.schoolcloud.co.uk/ . Pupil Emergency Contact Form  - For the new academic year, we are requesting your contact details along with at least 2 additional contacts for your child/ren. The requirement is a minimum of 3 emergency contacts. This year we are also asking for photographic & image consent. Secondary School Admissions Deadline is 31st October 2022 – If your child is currently in Year 6, please ensure that you have applied for a secondary school by the end of ½ term.  Please click on this link to apply School Admissions and for more information visit  www.eadmissions.org.uk

Reception School Admissions - If you have a child born between 1 September 2018 and 31 August 2019, you will need to apply for a primary school place by 15 January 2023.

Scholastic Book Club is up and running! Go to scholastic book club to browse the latest books and order online. For every £1 you spend on this month’s Book Club, our school will earn 20p in Scholastic Rewards.  Please place your order online by November 30th, 2022.  

Road safety Week  7th - 11th November - We take road safety very seriously at George Spicer and have an active Community Council consisting of children from each KS2 class. The Ambassadors are passionate about the safety around our school and want to protect the school community.  Road Safety Week is an opportunity for them to remind the school community to drive responsibly and park in one of our park and stride locations (please attach map).  

This year the Ambassadors would like to promote "Be Bright Be seen" and encourage everyone to make sure they are visible on the darker winter days when travelling to and from school. When purchasing a warm waterproof school coat look for brighter colours and those coats with reflective patches and panels. 

Bright Bags competition - Decorate your school bag so it can be more visible on your way to and from school.  Add brightly coloured ribbon, reflective stickers and other accessories to really help your bag glow on the darker days.

We ask that the bag is still functional and practical as a school bag - please minimise  dangly accessories that may be a trip hazard in the cloak room or when walking, as well as anything that takes up too much space.

Once decorated your bag should be able to continue to be used once Road Safety Week is over.

There will be a winner in EACH year group. 

Judging will take place throughout Road Safety Week so make sure your bag is in school every day to be in with a chance of winning!

Golden Padlock - For one week only a limited number of Golden Padlocks will be distributed at both school sites.  Wear a helmet when you cycle or scooter to school to be in with a chance of winning a prize.  If you see a Golden Padlock attached to your helmet take it to a school office to exchange it for a prize.  Good luck!

Healthy Snacks - As you know we are a healthy school and we want to continue to promote healthy eating. A reminder to all that during break times children at Sketty Road we encourage children to have fruit or vegetables as their snacks and not other items. At Kimberley Gardens the children are provided with fruit and vegetables from the government.

COFFEE MORNING 9.30am Tuesday 1^st November at Sketty Road

We are excited to be rolling out a new dual language ebook library for our children and families that speak English as an additional language.  A coffee morning will be held on 1^st November to provide more information and to support parents on how to access the ebook library with their children.

We are also looking for parents to support with translation at the coffee morning and would be grateful for any dual language speakers to offer their support to other parents on the day – please also email InclusionTeam@georgespicer.enfield.sch.uk to offer your support.

Wednesday 2nd November - Individual children's photographs during the school day and an opportunity for family photographs after school at Sketty Road from 3.30pm -4.30pm.  Please note that if your child has PE on the day you can send them in wearing white polo shirt or shirt and school jumper/cardigan.  Tracksuit bottoms as usual.

Parent Workshops

In this half-term, we have been delighted to have had our first parent sessions after the disruption of the COVID years. We are delighted to say that they went really well and were well received by the parents who attended. Our Years 1 and 2 had their Phonics Sessions, with parents commenting: "The children were all engaged and enthusiastic, this was great to see!" and that "I didn't learn to read using Phonics. It was useful to have this session so that I can understand it better". In KS2, we have been having our arithmetic sessions and parents felt that: "This helped me understand the methods the school uses - it is quite different to my day!" and "The children were all so positive and excited about maths - I couldn't believe it". Reception Class      

The children in Reception have been thinking all about autumn and which type of vegetables are harvested at this time of year. Pumpkins have been a popular choice for the children to choose, as well as the gourds that were picked, with Mrs Banks, over in the meadow. When Miss Harrold cut open the pumpkin the children were in awe of what they saw inside. 'There are so many seeds in there.' 'I see it is orange in the middle.' After the children explored the inside of the pumpkin using their different senses, we added food colouring and cornflour to the pumpkin. ' It looks like an explosion.' We decided to keep the pumpkin in our curiosity cube so the children can see it decay.

Year 1

Last week Year 1 had a special visit from Dr. Lola who is a pediatric opthomologist! Dr. Lola mentioned that from a very young age she loved Science and that she has always wanted to help people. She also shared her vision for a future where all children will choose to be kind to others, treat others fairly and perhaps become doctors like herself! We were inspired to hear about Dr. Lola's job and how she helps so many children with their eye sight. #SeeItToBeIt 

The children in Year 1 were very fortunate to have a Teams meeting with the store manager of Aldi. The children asked him questions about his role. The children thoroughly enjoyed the Q&A session, and were amazed to hear that as many as 64,000 people visit his store every week.  Charlotte said, "I enjoyed the visit as I got to learn more about different people's jobs". #SeeItToBeIt 

In Science, we been exploring different types of plastics. We learnt about the importance of recycling. The children looked at different plastic containers and had to identify whether or not they were recyclable. They then had to classify them and put in the relevant section, ‘recyclable’ or ‘non-recyclable’. Children found out that not all plastics are recyclable. We spoke about Global Goal 15, 'Life on Land' and discussed the responsibilities that we have to recycle as much as possible and ensure we leave no rubbish on the floor.

Year 2

As part of Black History Month, this week we have been very lucky to have had Carl visit Year 2 to talk to the children about his job as a teacher.  He explained what inspired him and how passionate he is to work alongside his pupils.  The children thoroughly enjoyed listening and asking questions, and I know he inspired us all. 

Our Reading and Phonics Workshops also went well this week – thanks to all parents who were able to attend.  We have great feedback after the sessions and the pupils really enjoyed showing off their skills!

Year 3 

This week is Creative Writing Week. In English, Year 3 have been working on writing a first-person narrative about a 'Noise in the Attic'. The children had several different sound effects played to them and were then tasked with creating their own story that revolved around strange noises coming from an attic. The children were free to be as creative as they liked. The only requirements were that they developed the plot, the character and the setting. The children first did a draft copy of the beginning of their story, before reviewing their work and writing it up neatly. Some examples are shown below. 

Year 5 

Year 5 - Gargoyles! 

As our Autumn 1 topic, Gothic Architecture, comes to an end this half term, we have been amazed by the quality of work our children have produced! In Art this term, inspired by our trip to Abney Park the children created gargoyles, focusing on the techniques of scoring, using slip and blending the pieces of clay together. The children experimented with proportion and placement of the key features. The children thoroughly enjoyed creating their own interpretations of gargoyles and learning new skills, linked to clay sculpting and moulding.

The children said:

"I positioned the tongue at the side of the mouth to make my gargoyle look bizarre and out of proportion."

"I used the tools to dig out the eyeball sockets, which helped me to shape the open mouth of my gargoyle."

"I added extra features and texture to my gargoyle to make it look more menacing."

The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about Gothic Architecture this term. After half term, we will be beginning our History and Geography topic Realm of The Khan, based on the Mongolian Empire and the formidable leader and tyrant, Genghis Khan.

Well done Year 5 on a fantastic start to the year. We have been very impressed with your enthusiasm, respect and curiosity that you have shown these past 7 weeks - keep up the excellent work! Enjoy your half-term break. 

Year 6 

Our Masterpieces

Year 6 are concluding their art topic this week by creating their own masterpieces. We have spent this half-term refining and developing our own interpretation of the theme "Life and Death". Using the skills we have practised, we are diligently working towards completing these works of art. We think the work speaks for itself. See below:
