- Year 6 SAT's - well done to all of Year 6 who have completed their SAT's this week
- Reporting absences - If your child is unwell or will be absent from school, please leave a short message on the answer machine clearly stating your child's name, class and nature of the illness. Please advise what exactly is wrong rather than 'feeling unwell'. Absences must be reported by 9am, either by phone or email.
- Lateness – The number of children arriving late in the mornings is high. Gates close at 9am and learning starts promptly at this time. If your child is 5 minutes late every day, this equates to nearly 3 whole days of missed learning, plus it’s disruptive for other children.
- PE Days - Children are to wear PE kits into school on PE Days. Please remember; NO JEWELLERY for PE; earrings must be removed or taped (staff WILL NOT tape the earrings back)
- ParentPay accounts - please make sure that Breakfast & After School and School dinners accounts are topped up.

Reception Class
This week is Wellbeing week! We have explored the 5 ways to wellbeing: to give, to learn, to take notice, to be active and to connect.
We did activities as part of our learning throughout the week and on Tuesday afternoon our partner class in Year 3 visited Kimberley Gardens to connect with us. Whilst we were there, we did lots of activities including, games, using the parachute, planting a sunflower seed, reading together and giving each other compliments and writing them down on petals. All of the children connected together and made a new friend in their partner class.
We gifted our partner class their sunflower seed so they can ’take notice and watch it grow over the summer. Year 3 gifted us a beautiful bracelet to take home. Thank you!

Year 1
On Tuesday 10th of May, Year 5 came to Year 1 classes to connect and build new friendships for Mental Health Week. Each class completed a range of Art activities. Willow and their Year 5 class were given a task to produce a nature picture of their choice. They had to work together to complete this task. They learnt a new skill.
Ruby Rose: “First we drew a picture with our partners. We used white crayons to draw the picture”.
George: “Then we wet the page with a brush and water”.
Anna Maria: “Then we painted the picture with watercolours. We had so much fun. We drew two pictures and one was given to each child”. Elm class looked at primary and secondary colours and had a lesson about mixing to produce different colours. Ash class made posters to express a characteristic that they want to achieve with their Year 5 class.
Each class made a gift to give their partner class. Year 5 made some amazing bookmarks to give to Year 1 and Year 1 gave some friendship cards and flowers and worry buddies to give to Year 5. We had a fantastic time because Year 5 were so kind and helpful. We even went outside in the garden and Year 5 read to us! Thank you Year 5 for a great afternoon!

Year 2
As part of Mental Health Awareness week, Year 2 connected with Year 4. We created our own versions of snakes and ladders to present as a gift to each class. Thinking about the theme 'loneliness', we discussed how playing games with our friends makes us feel and how they can help to bring people together.
On Wednesday afternoon, we visited Sketty Road to meet with Year 4. The children really enjoyed their visit and the different activities we took part in. Each class split into groups of 10 to match up with a group of Year 4 children. Before the torrential rain set in, we took part in an obstacle course competing against each other and then worked together in groups to create the tallest tower out of just one sheet of newspaper and masking tape! It was wonderful to see the team work between the year 4 and year 2 children, sharing and listening to each other's ideas of how best to create the sturdiest tower.

Year 3
During Wellbeing Week, Year 3 explored the 5 ways to wellbeing: to give, to learn, to take notice, to be active and to connect.
We did activities as part of our learning throughout the week and on Tuesday afternoon we went down to Kimberley Gardens, to connect with our partner classes in Reception. Whilst we were there, we did lots of activities including, games, using the parachute, planting a sunflower seed, reading together and giving each other compliments and writing them down on petals. All of the children connected together and made a new friend in their partner class.
Before we visited Reception, we made each child a gift – a friendship bracelet – which we gave to our partner class when we visited on the Tuesday.
Theo: My brother is in Snowdrop class and I got to do my learning with him! It was so much fun!

Year 4
In Geography this week as part of our Ancient Greece topic, we located Greece on our class map. We talked about the size of Greece, its location and surrounding areas. We then used our Atlases to identify mountains in Greece. We looked at the key used with the maps and made a link between the colours used and the altitude of the different mountains! We discovered that Mount Olympus is the tallest mountain in Greece! For our activity we labelled the mountains in Greece and used a key to show the difference in altitude for each mountain.
In PSHE this week we continued our Relationships topic by looking at loss and bereavement. We listened to a story called The Heart and the Bottle by Oliver Jeffers, then had discussions about the different emotions we might experience when dealing with loss. We completed an activity about feelings that the character in the story bottled up due to a loss. We then wrote things that inspired us around our bottles.
In English this week, we will be writing a first-person narrative from the perspective of King Aegeus, Thesus' father, who may have felt anxious at the thought of his son attempting to defeat the deadly Minotaur. In our writing we will focus on the king's feelings and write from his stream of consciousness. To help us prepare for our writing, we did a thought tunnel activity. In this activity one person was the king and shared a range of ideas about how King Aegeus would have felt knowing that Theseus was in the labyrinth.

Year 5
This week, Year 5 have been celebrating Wellbeing Week by learning about the 5 ways to wellbeing: be active, to give, to keep learning, to take notice and to connect! We began by discussing what wellbeing meant to us and what we did to support our wellbeing, such as reading, cooking, swimming, playing team sports and being outside! We decided that with this in mind, to help improve Year 1s wellbeing, we made the Year 1 children a gift. We made animal origami bookmarks to support them with their learning and to support them with their reading.
On Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, each class visited Year 1 to support them in their learning of art! We talked to the children about the colour wheel and how to make secondary colours, using primary colours and mixing! We had a wonderful afternoon, speaking to the Year 1 about their learning, getting to know them better and also, what fun activities they enjoyed doing to improve their wellbeing. Well done to Year 1 and year 5 on a fantastic afternoon of sharing and connecting with one another!

Year 6
This week, Year 6 have been supporting each other as they successfully complete their SATs. Not only have they leant on each other for support/encouragement but they have also given each other the gift of a compliment - to bring a smile to one another.
We started the week by completing a meditation and then discussed the theme of resilience. We thought about challenges we may have to overcome as well as how, through connecting to others, we can overcome them. This links well to Global Goal 3 which looks at promoting Good Health and Well-Being.
To celebrate the end of tests, we plan to come together as a year group and spend some time in the playing fields. The children discussed how nature and being active improves their well-being, so we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate both well-being well and all their hard efforts.
The Year 6 team want to, once again, share how unbelievably proud they are of all of their children. It was a joy to see them complete the papers in a calm and collected fashion.

Community Kitchen
Over Easter we had a community kitchen built at Sketty Road thanks to funding through the Local Authority. The kitchen now has beautiful work surfaces, great ovens and shiny new sinks! It is a lovely place for the children to do their cookery elements of the curriculum in. The afterschool cookery club is now working in our community kitchen and enjoying the great space. Here they are making yummy cheese scones.

Walk to School week
Walk to School Week 16th-20th May
During Walk to School Week , make an extra effort to use sustainable travel to travel to and from school. If your child walks, scooters, cycles, uses public transport or park and stride they can wear trainers with their school uniform.
Walk to School week is a special week and we want to raise awareness of the different ways families can travel to and from school using sustainable and active transportation. Wearing trainers is not part of school uniform so after Walk to School Week we would be expecting all children to resume wearing normal smart uniform.
