George Spicer Newsletter - 14th March 2025
On Wednesday 12th February, a selected group of School Ambassadors representing all year groups, went to the Houses of Parliament. Feryal Clark kindly granted us exclusive entry and members of her team met with the children for a private tour.
It was extremely busy as Sir Keir Starmer was participating in Prime Minister Question Time in the House of Commons!
The Ambassadors were taken into a restricted area to a private Committee Meeting Room, where they watched Feryl Clark on a screen, speaking live in the House of Commons. They then watched a very heated live stream debate between the Prime Minister and another MP.
Feryal Clark surprised us all and took time out of her busy day to come and say hello. It was lovely to see her again and she greeted the Ambassadors like old friends. In their meetings the Ambassadors have expressed concern about pollution and Global warming. A petition signed by the children of George Spicer asking for changes to the Clean Air Law was given to her and she promised to pass it onto Sir Keir Starmer.
The Ambassadors had a wonderful day out and so many people throughout the day commented on what well behaved and polite children they are. The visit has enabled them to understand a bit more about our UK Parliament and understand how they have the potential to make positive changes within our school community. Pupil Voice is valued at George Spicer Primary School and we look forwards to hearing more about what they have to say.

Reception
Last week we celebrated World Book Day. The children learnt an extract from the poem 'Chocolate Cake' by Michael Rosen and performed to the Year 4 children in the afternoon. The Year 4 children then spent some time reading with the children in Reception. Lots of children were very excited to talk about their favourite books and stories.
'My favourite book is Jack and the beanstalk and my favourite part was when the giant was chasing Jack'. N - Poppy class
'My favourite book is the Gruffalo and my favourite page is when the snake sees the mouse'. S - Poppy class.

Year 1
This week Year 1 have been writing letters in the role of the character from our literacy book ‘The Sea Saw’. The children have been focusing on prefixes and conjunctions which they have also used in their letters. The children will use the book ‘The Sea Saw’ to plan their own story using one of their favourite toys as a character. We have already started creating our own titles and began drawing our own story maps.

Year 2
Year 2 had an amazing World Book Day! We spent the morning doing lots of reading for pleasure activities. We discussed our favourite books and stories; role-played interesting parts of the stories and played reading games. We then worked on our oracy and performance skills in preparation for our performance to Year 5 later in the day. Micheal Rosen's 'Chocolate Cake' was our starting point! We thought of the emotions in the poem and how we could convey them to our audience as well as inventing actions and playing with the tone of our voices.
Our partner class was Atlantic in Year 5. They performed to us and we reciprocated. Year 2 enjoyed spending time at Sketty Road in preparation for our transition to Year 3 in September! World Book Day was a great celebration of reading and stories. Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed it and have certainly developed their love of reading even further!

Year 3
Year 3 had a lovely week experiencing their first trip in Year 3. They visited the Gurdwara which linked to their RW topic – Sikhism. They travelled by bus and train to get there and behaved impeccably.
During their visit, they learnt more about the Sikhism religion, how the Gurdwara is used and their incredible hospitality of welcoming and feeding people from the local community. It was amazing to see how well the children responded to questions posed – demonstrating all the knowledge they have gained from their learning inside the classroom. To top it all off, the children also got to enjoy a delicious biscuit and some squash at the end of the session. A big thank you to all the parents that helped out on the trip!

Year 4
The children in Year 4 have been working hard on using their mathematical knowledge of place value and fractions to understand decimals. They are learning that a decimal number means the number is not quite whole and that we have parts remaining. The main decimals that we will be learning are tenths and hundredths. In our lessons, we have been looking at visual representations to support our understanding and doing mini tasks such as writing visual representations out in decimal form and discussing which representation has the largest value and explaining how we know this. The children then really impressed us with learning how to write equivalent fractions to decimals and made links to previous learning. If this wasn't enough, the year group have also been learning the different ways to order fractions and decimals on a number line. They have used mathematical vocabulary such as place value, parts, whole, fractions, numerator, denominator, decimals, tenths, hundredths and value.

Year 5
Over the past week or so, Year 5 have enjoyed World Book Day 2025, creating portrait artwork of King Henry VIII, learning how to ride bikes confidently and continuing to refine their writing skills using the topical text - The Island, by Armin Greder.
Last Friday, Year 5 were joined by some very eager Year 2s as we celebrated World Book Day by performing the poem 'Chocolate Cake' by Michael Rosen.

The artwork we produced wouldn't look out of place in the National Portrait Gallery, alongside some of the finest portraits of all time!

We summarised the story of The Island and linked the main themes to the UNCRC articles. We also used idioms for effect, when writing a short informal diary entry from the perspective of the stranger - giving a voice to the voiceless.

Year 6
Last week, Year 6 began a new unit of work in PE. This term they will be learning the skills needed to play hockey. They started their lessons by learning about how to hold the sticks for maximum control then using just the flat side to guide the hockey ball around the cones. It's a tricky skill and it took a little while to get used to controlling the ball by moving around it, rather than using both sides of the stick. This week the children began to pass and stop the ball. This is all in preparation for starting some smaller group matches, where the children will need to pass and intercept the ball. It's a tricky game but Year 6 are definitely up to the challenge!

Year 5 BikeAbility Cycle Training
Last week, 24 children across year 5 participated in Enfield’s cycle training programme. The children started learning basic manoeuvres in the playground, from riding one-handed while signalling to safely performing an emergency stop. Most children then progressed onto cycling along the road under close supervision. This was a little daunting yet exciting for many of the children as it was their first opportunity to do this. However, all children returned to school with beaming smiles on their faces and a huge sense of achievement at completing this challenge.
We are working closely with Enfield Council to provide another opportunity for more year 5 children to take part in cycle training in the summer term, so we can have more children riding safely on our roads.
Well done to all 24 children who took part!

Year 5 and 6 Netball League Matches
Over the last 2 weeks we have been taking part in our Netball League matches against other Enfield schools. The children have been working incredibly hard in our Netball Club with Mr Rasheed over the last term and a half, and their skills and teamwork have really developed! We have played 4 out of 6 matches so far, winning 2, drawing 1 and losing 1. At this point in the season we are pleased with the performances, particularly with the number of points we have scored!
We have 2 more fixtures next week so we will keep you updated on our final league position.
Well done to all year 5 and 6 children who have taken part!
