George Spicer Newsletter - 7th February 2025

World Book Day will be celebrated on Friday 7th March to allow all year groups to take part in the activities. We will not be dressing up and the theme will be poetry. There will be having a variety of activities taking place throughout the day.
We shall be arranging a book swap whereby your child can bring a book, that they want to swap, into school on Thursday 6th March. On Friday 7th March, your child will be given the opportunity to bring home a book that another child has bought in to school to swap. If your child would like to bring in more than one book to swap, they are very welcome to. However, they will only be able to take one book in exchange on Friday 7th March.

Please remember we have just over one week until we find out who the winners of the Oxford Reading Buddy prizes are for this half term. There has been an increase in families logging on to read books and complete the quizzes, which is fantastic to see!

Reception
This week Reception have been reading ‘Super Milly and the Super School Day’ by Stephanie Clarkson. This picture book is a lively story which combines superhero fun with an underlying message that being kind is the very best sort of superpower.
The children have been writing about what special super hero powers they would have and discussing how kindness is a big part of being a true hero.

Year 1
This week Year 1 have been using their scientific skills to observe, compare and test which materials are waterproof and which are absorbent. The children have also been discussing which properties make objects useful. They worked brilliantly in groups and discussed their findings. The children then recorded their findings on table by categorising which material was waterproof or absorbent.
"The water soaked through into the beaker!".
"The plastic is waterproof, it's just running down".
"We use waterproof coats when it is raining outside".

Year 2
In History, Year 2 have been learning about The Great Fire of London. We have explored Samuel Pepys diary entries and been on fact finding missions to ensure we know all about the fire. We have been discussing what made the fire spread faster and what could have been done to stop it.
In Design and Technology, we have begun creating our own 17th Century houses. The children have thought about the materials and decided how best to build the houses! Here are some of the children's wonderful sketches and designs. This week and next we will be making these houses 3D!

Year 3
Year 3 have been learning about different types of settlements in History. They also learnt in greater detail what a village is, what makes it different from other settlements, as well as learning about different types of villages in the UK.
In Maths, they have been developing their knowledge and skills on how to add money, work out change and convert different amounts of money.
In addition, Year 3 have spent the last couple of weeks preparing for and showcasing their class assemblies. Well done future budding stars of the stage!

Year 4
The children in Year 4 had a very exciting experience to kick-start our new book for writing, 'The Story of Tutankhamun'. The whole year group gathered round for our own 'archeological dig' in which children carefully used their hands and brushes to uncover ancient artefacts. We have learnt what it means to 'excavate' and how items from the past help us to discover what life was like. Back in class, we used our previous knowledge and learning to build on children's vocabulary. Year 4 had the opportunity to 'speculate' what the objects were and who they could have belonged to. This is where we used modal verbs to express a level of certainty such as would, should, could and might. Finally, the children discussed their thoughts on what they know, what they think they know and what they want to find out. They recorded their responses using a variety of conjunctions and will now be using their own mind-maps of information to write a non-chronological report about the Ancient Egyptian Lifestyle.

Year 5
Year 5 have been busy getting to grips with their new writing topic 'The Lost Thing' by Shaun Tan this week. We began the topic by exploring how 'the sense of belonging' differs from 'belongings' themselves. In addition, we have been constructing sentences with relative clauses. This has enhanced our writing and added detail.

In Science, we have been surveying our school building; we have assessed the materials used and checked for wear and tear. We will be informing Mr Mangiapane (site-manager) of our findings and making some recommendations along the way!

We continue to refer to the Rights Respecting Charter within all of our lessons. We have also been making our RRS language challenge more challenging by trying to recall the definitions as well as the keywords such as 'Duty Bearer', 'Rights Holder' and 'Respect'.

We are also delighted to see the phenomenal progress shown by our pupils during swimming lessons this term. Keep up the good work Year 5!

Year 6
In Science, Year 6 are continuing to learn about light. This week they carried out an experiment to determine how changing an object's position so it is closer to or further away from a light source affects the size of the shadow made. The children made their own puppets and then carried out an experiment, ensuring that all the variables were consistent and made it a fair experiment. Ask the children what they discovered about the size of a shadow when the object is moved further from the light source. They get bonus points if they can use the technical vocabulary - dependent variable, straight line, light source and block.

This week, Year 6 have been using their imagination to create a pet that might be found in the fantasy world of 'The Arrival'. This is the book we have been basing our writing on this term. It is a strange place, full of flying cars, unusual statues and unique technology. The children invented a pet then wrote a report about what the pet is, how to look after it, what food it likes and what its habits are. These are two of the unusual creatures they invented.
