Road Safety Week - 18th-22nd November 2024

Children have the right to be safe on the streets.

•Road crashes are the leading cause of death for children and young people worldwide.

•More than six children are killed or seriously injured on roads every day in the UK.

•Pollution from traffic causes respiratory illnesses and other diseases.

During Road Safety Week children will take part in lessons and an assembly with a road safety focus.

As a parent/carer please do your bit to help keep the children in our school community safe on our streets:

Avoid parking on the zig zag yellow lines

Choose active travel to and from school

Park and Stride - use the map to choose the best car park for you.

Accessorise coats and bags with reflective and hi-vis materials so your child can be seen easily on dark and gloomy days.

Wear a seatbelt and if your child is less than 135cm use a booster car seat.  More information can be found here.

Year 1

This week, the children in Year 1 have been learning about Remembrance Day.  They learnt that some people wear a red poppy to remember all those who have lost their lives fighting in wars.  The children designed and made a poppy; which enabled them to develop their fine motor skills by separating layers of tissue paper and twisting pipe-cleaners .  Next, they evaluated their poppy by saying what they liked and discussed how they could improve a model.

Year 2

To mark Remembrance Day the children created beautiful colour wash landscapes of a field full of poppies. They learnt about the significance of the poppy and why it is used as a symbol to remember all those lost at war.

To create a field they marked where the sky met the land and used chalks to then wash over with water to make a colour wash. Year 2 took great care marking and wetting their pieces of artwork and the finished result is very effective. Well done Year 2!

Year 3 

Mountains

Year 3 are learning about mountains this half-term. They began by drawing the difference between a mountain and a hill. We look forward to learning more about mountains as this half-term progresses.  

Did you know that a mountain is a hill that is over 600m tall? 

Year 5 

It was the turn of Arctic and Mediterranean Classes to visit Abney Park this week. In the wonderful winter sunshine, the classes enjoyed another thrilling tour from Steph and her colleague. The children were intrigued by the stories behind the gravestones, asking questions with genuine curiosity. They also listened carefully to the talk given regarding the history of the chapel and the restoration process. Before heading back to school, the children enjoyed sketching the 'Rose' and 'Lancelet' windows. The classes can be proud of how well they behaved, by 'Choosing Respect' at all times. 

We have also been rounding off our RW topic (What would Jesus do?) by focusing on The Crucifix. We used knowledge from previous lessons and the parables that Jesus told, to explain what the Christian Values mean to Christians in the modern world. 

Year 6 

Year 6 had the opportunity to visit the local mosque. This week Istanbul and Kingston paid a visit - Mumbai and Lagos will be going next Monday. The children learned about the mosque's features and discussed the five pillars of Islam, which are the core beliefs and practices of the Muslim faith. We have been learning about this in our RW lessons, so it was an amazing experience to see this in practice in a mosque. The visit provided valuable insights into Islamic culture and religion.
