Year 6
Elections and Polls
Year 6 have had discussions about elections this week and looked at the reliability of polls. We discussed that a poll was a survey that is used to gauge an idea of how a country might vote.
Firstly, we looked at a poll and discussed what information we could learn from it. We then discussed how this could not be reliable depending on the group of people chosen to participate.
We were then told we lived in an area that had an election. There were two candidates: A and B. We were given our own character cards telling us not only how we would vote but also what we would tell others about how we were voting. We moved around the room to share what we wanted to.
Once we had time to talk to each other, we took a poll on who we thought would win. This showed Candidate B would win. However, some people weren’t honest in the poll or were secretive, so when we held our election, candidate A won.
From this we saw how polls can be misleading. We discussed whether we thought using polls was good or bad.
After this, we had a challenge to discuss how the world would be if:
1. 80 year olds ruled the world
2. 9 year olds ruled the world
Below are our ideas:
