GSPS Ambassadors visit the Houses of Parliament and Tesco
On Friday 21st June the GSPS Ambassadors from Years 1-5 visited the Houses of Parliament. They saw the House of Commons and the House of Lords and learnt about how Parliament works. They spent time in the Great Hall and stood in the spot where Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II laid in state after she passed away. While we were there, Big Ben chimed midday.
The Ambassadors then participated in a workshop on debating and discussed whether petrol and diesel cars should be banned in favour of electric vehicles. They put forward their views eloquently and respectfully. Jaiden was the speaker of the house and when things got a little too loud he had to say, "Order! Order!" to restore calm. Jaiden said "It felt really cool to say "order order"". The majority of children said "AYE" to the ban.
The police officers were very friendly to the children and we reminded the children that police help with their right to be safe: UNCRC Articles 3 (Best interest of the child) and 6 (Right to life and survival)
Afterwards, the staff at the Houses of Parliament commented on how we were the best-behaved school. They were impressed with how knowledgeable the children are how they asked some really good questions.
Maggie gave the trip a double thumbs up.
Eliana said the best bit was; "When we discussed the laws we could make."
Throughout the day, the children were polite and respectful and we are all so proud of how well they represented George Spicer Primary School. Well done Taqwa, Jaiden, Maggie, Nathaniel, Sofia, Adesire, Aine, Eliana, Kian, Darcy, Rayaan, Raymond, Henryk, Asher, Dane, James and Mahli.
On Wednesday the 26th June, the George Spicer Ambassadors were invited to our local Tesco's in Enfield Town. We were shown around the store to look at the produce and to see the amazing charity work they are doing. Unfortunately for those shoppers who expected it to be the quiet hour (9-10am) , they were presented with a very enthusiastic and inquiring bunch of children!
There was lots to discuss, like where our produce comes from and what impact eating pineapples from Costa Rica has on our climate (Global Goal 12 Responsible Consumption and Production and Global Goal 13 - Climate Action). We noticed how strawberries were more locally grown and how labeling is so important for us to make an informed choice. By law, all food needs the country of origin clearly labeled, even the loose fruit and vegetables. This was quickly linked to our Houses of Parliament trip (UNCRC Article 4 - Making Rights Real).
Tesco's have food bins, where food is donated to food banks and charities (UNCRC Article 26 - Social and Economic Help). Did you know? £5.3 million a year funding is available for Stronger Starts grants to help schools and other organisations. We will be applying for this grant shortly, so look out for George Spicer when placing your blue tokens in the boxes. Also, we were presented with a voucher, which we plan to purchase litter pickers with, so we can start an after school Eco Club, as requested by students through our ambassadors.
If you are a customer, Tesco's would really welcome and value your feedback.
