Reception
Reception: Spring and Easter
Reception have been looking at Easter and the season of Spring. We discussed what we could see in the world around us- some children said they have noticed flowers growing and others said that they have seen more bugs around. We even made some chocolate nests and observed the changes of state when melting chocolate. We also discussed different celebrations that people observe this time of the year with a focus on the Easter story. Additionally, the children made an Easter or Spring card for their friends and family as a way of celebrating this time of the year.

Year 1
This week in Year 1, have completed different activities for their Maths Morning, in celebration of World Maths Day. We took part in a shape relay, where the children had to take turns running and completing a Maths puzzle. We had a 3D shape hunt around the classrooms and playground. We also practised our numbers to 50 when we made our very own snakes and ladders board.

Year 2
Year 2 have had an action packed last week of Spring Term. In Science, we looked at how to keep ourselves healthy and the importance of being clean and hygienic. In our 'Healthy me' PSHE topic we discussed different healthy snacks and made yummy fruit kebabs. The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Happy Puzzle workshop, working together to problem-solve and complete tasks. Along with a fun 'Maths day' full of practical problems and games.

Year 3
Year 3 have demonstrated what great mathematicians they are as they celebrated Maths Day this week. They carried out different maths related activities, such as working out coded calculations using a key, creating their own maths game, learning all about the number 100 and attending a maths puzzle workshop. Please see the pictures below evidencing all the fun they had!

Year 4
Year 4 enjoyed their Geography Fieldwork on Wednesday. Their task was to see how many vehicles pass by Southbury road over a 20 minute period. We were shocked to see over 70 cars going up and down Southbury Road. When a truck passed by, our data logger gave a decibel reading of 86.2, wow! We then represented our findings using a bar chart. We really enjoyed our morning!

Year 5
It has been a fun and busy week this week in year 5 with visits, visitors and a Maths day! In Geography this week year 5 were out and about looking at the shops in the local area for our Geography fieldwork. We were presented with a challenge – to suggest a type of shop that would be appropriate for one of the vacant shops on Southbury Road. We did a tally of all the different types of shops already on Southbury Road. The challenge was to suggest a business that was unique but that would be popular with the local population and demographic around George Spicer School. Luckily it didn’t rain and the children enjoyed taking part in practical Geography and using their Geography skills in our local area.
Tuesday was Maths day and all day we joined in with interesting maths activities and games. We were lucky to have a workshop hosted by The Happy Puzzle Company and we got to try out some of their games and puzzles, working as a team to solve the problems. Also visiting on Tuesday were the London Fire Brigade who were here to talk about fire safety and hazards around the home.

Year 6
Celebrating Maths
This week, Year 6 had a day dedicated to Maths and looked at how we can 'play' with Maths. We took part in a series of activities throughout the day to explore.
Make 24
This game involved us having to use all the 4 numbers to make the number 24. We could use any of the four operations but had to use all 4 numbers given to us. It was fun to puzzle out the answer but exasperating when we got so close but not at the desired number.
Computing
We had the opportunity to play different Maths games on the computer today. We explored fractions, worded problems, countdown themed activities and enjoyed playing with Maths.
Art
As part of an art activity, Y6 used the Maths skill of tessellation to create works of art. We thought about how our shape (an arrow) could be rotated and repeated to create a tessellated work of art. Look at some examples below:
Happy Puzzle Company
Each class had a workshop with the Happy Puzzle Company. During this time, we worked on our problem-solving skills as well as teamwork. Some of the challenges were really quite hard and the children did amazingly to stay focused and determined.

Maths Day at GSPS
At GSPS this week, we have thoroughly enjoyed participating in our very own Maths Day. This year's theme was 'playing with maths' and as part of that theme we have enjoyed a whole host of diverse activities. Early Years and KS1 have enjoyed going on a scavenger hunt for different shapes around the school. They have also been playing maths games, improving their fluency with 'Number of the Day' and using plenty of manipulatives and practical maths equipment! KS2 have enjoyed maths quizzes, problem-solving, online maths games and getting creative with shape tessellation!
The school has been fortunate to welcome The Happy Puzzle Company once again. They have facilitated workshops for Reception right up to Year 6 over the past week. It has been a roaring success, whereby the pupils have revelled in maths problem-solving, logic and puzzles. They have shown a tremendous amount of resilience, teamwork, co-operative learning and brain power in solving a variety of complex puzzles and non-routine problems. The halls were 'a buzz' with the sight and sound of pupils learning and enjoying the workshops provided. A massive thank you to all pupils and staff for making the day such memorable success.
