George Spicer Newsletter - 15th September 2023

• Contact details - please ensure that your contact phone numbers and addresses are up-to-date 
• Absences - must be reported in writing or by phone by 9am daily. Please leave a brief message with child's name, class and the reason for their absence.  It will be recorded as unauthorised if you do not leave a reason or say your child is 'unwell'.  
• ParentPay – ‘we are a cashless school’ - every child at the school has a ParentPay account (If you are new to George Spicer, a login will be issued shortly). If your child attends Breakfast and After School Club please ensure that your account is paid in advance and up-to-date. 
• Use of childcare vouchers Please click on the letter for guidance on the use of childcare vouchers at George Spicer.
• Labelling school uniform - please ensure that you label your child's school uniform.  Previously we have accumulated so much lost property, if you label items they can be returned to the child/ren. 
• Year 6 walking home alone – If you would like your child to walk home alone, please email the office on office@georgespicer.enfield.sch.uk
• Year 6 mobile phone – Only children with permission to walk home alone are permitted to bring in mobile phones to school.
• Climbing frames - Please DO NOT allow your children to play on the climbing frames at both Kimberly Gardens and Sketty Road before and after school.
• Play leader vacancies - We have vacancies for lunchtime play leaders please email the office on office@georgespicer.enfield.sch.uk for more an application form.
• P.E Lessons - no jewellery to be worn for PE and earrings to be taken out or taped at home. Properly fitting trainers are required for PE lessons.  If your child is unable to tie laces, we recommend buying trainers with velcro.  If your child wears laces, please make sure they are able to untie and retie them independently.
• Music Lessons - Please note if your child is signed up for music lessons. Monday-Flute, Tuesday-Violin/Viola, Wednesday-Piano/Keyboard, Friday-Piano/Keyboard/Guitar.
• Welfare Donations - Please can we have donations of wipes, tissues and plasters for our welfare.

Reception

Reception have had an exciting week settling into life at George Spicer School. We have been exploring our classroom and have engaged in lots of fun learning activities across the early year’s curriculum. Through supported interactions with the adults, we have been learning how to make good friendships and cooperate with others. Over the course of the week, we have developed confidence in expressing ourselves and our feelings as we settle into school. The construction area has been a particular favourite with the children! We worked together to build a large marble run structure, taking turns to share our imaginative ideas! We look forward to getting to know each other more in the weeks to come.

Year 1

This week in Year 1 the children have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We have been exploring our environment and going on shape hunts looking for 3D shapes.  The children have enjoyed using key vocabulary  to describe 2D and 3D shapes words such as corners, sides and faces. Encourage your children on your way to school to find different 3D shapes and let your teachers know.

Year 2

This week in Year 2, the pupils have continued to use adjectives, this time to create similes based on characters from ‘The Wind in the Willows’.  They have continued to learn about shapes in Maths, and have used 2D shapes to create pictures of objects, such as rockets.  In Science, they have learnt about the five basic needs for survival and labelled some pictures to show what animals may need to stay alive.

Year 3 

Over the last week in Year 3, the pupils have continued to write their stories based on Kiz Kulesi (The Maiden’s Tower) and begun to learn about position and direction in Maths.  As part of their Science Topic , Forces and Magnets, the pupils have enjoyed using magnets to find out what materials are magnetic and which are not.  They have also begun to explore magnetic poles (North and South) and whether or not they will attract or repel each other.

Year 5 

It has been a busy week in year 5 this week. In writing we are still enjoying the Dracula story which has helped the children write some exciting dialogue in the story between Jonathan Harker and his landlady. We have immersed ourselves in Gothic architecture by researching and analysing gargoyles particularly learning about their (mostly) practical, aesthetic and spiritual functions. Our adventures into Gothic architecture also included a visit to Abney Park Cemetery in Stoke Newington. The children loved seeing the vast array of tombstones and learning what the different designs represent. The cemetery was a very tranquil place and we sat for a while and sketched amongst the welcome shade of the trees. Year 5 behaved impeccably throughout and were a credit to George Spicer. 

Year 6 

Year 6 have had a great week, starting with an incredible immersive experience about Macbeth. The children enjoyed taking on the roles of some of the key characters such as the King Duncan's sons Malcolm and Donalbain as well as Banquo's son Fleance.

We are really  excited to see the children's writing based on the play following such a dynamic way tom be introduced to the story.
