George Spicer Newsletter - 7th July 2023

Hot weather - Please keep an eye on the weather.  On hot days please ensure your child brings in a water bottle, a hat/cap and apply sun cream at home.

Hay fever/Allergies - If your child has hay fever or any other allergies please can you administer antihistamine in the morning before your child comes to school.

ParentPay accounts - Please make sure Breakfast & After School and school dinners accounts are topped up. All debts must be cleared by 14th July 2023.

Year 6 PGL next year - next instalment due 31st July

Lost property/labelling - We have already accumulated a mountain of lost property, please ensure all your child's clothing is labelled especially jumpers/coats as these seem to be left in the playground/classroom. If labelled we can then return to your child.

Donations - Please may we have donations of wipes, tissues and plasters for welfare.

Lunchtime colouring club - Due to the success of lunchtime colouring club please may we have donations of  soft chalk, colouring pencils, crayons and markers.

Reception Class

This week we have been learning about Pride! It has been a very exciting and thoughtful week. We have learnt about the structure of different families and how everyone is special and unique. We should feel proud of our families no matter what they look like or who they love. In our classrooms, we did some excellent writing about our families, about why we love them and how they make us feel proud. We even made some beautiful collages using different materials of our families. Lastly, we have made a huge Pride flag! It is a rainbow made of handprints. This is to represent everybody being different - however, we can all work together and show respect to each other. 

Year 1

For Pride Week, Year 1 explored how all families are different. We spoke about each of our own families and identified that, very few families look the same. We looked at the story 'And Tango Makes Three' by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell. 

Deniz said, "Everyone deserves to have a family who loves them". 

Ariana said, "Pride week is important because it tells people to be happy for who they are as everybody is different in their own way".  The children had fantastic contributions this week, we are really impressed with their responsible and mature answers. Each child made their own Pride flag using

Year 2

This week in Year 2 was very exciting as the pupils in Sparrow class performed for their parents. They were absolutely amazing, despite their nerves, and sang their hearts out! Thanks to everyone that came to watch - we look forward to the rest of the performances next week.  

Sports day was also a great day - the pupils should be really proud of all their efforts.  Afterwards, pupils all had a chance to recount what they enjoyed. The races were a big hit!  We have also had a creative writing week. The pupils all planned their own story based on a journey to their chosen destination. They thoroughly enjoyed the chance to make their own choices and showed great imagination and creativity!

Year 3 

In ICT this week, Year 3 were understanding the rules for social media platforms. We first looked at what social media platforms are used for. Then we discussed why social media platforms have age-restrictions. Safety is a priority! We made a list of some top tips, so we can inform others on how to stay safe whilst using social media platforms.  

Year 5 

In writing, we have continued with the Frankenstein theme, but this week we have been writing a stream of consciousness from the perspective of the monster. The children have really enjoyed it!

During Pride week, we learnt about the history of Pride and designed our own Pride march placards.

Year 6 

Pride Week

For Pride week in PSHE, Year 6 looked at how we can be supportive human beings and accepting of people for who they are. We discussed how it might feel for a person that identifies themselves as LGBTQ+ to share their identity with others for fear of being treated differently. We discussed how some people could have responded to this and the phrases that could be upsetting or problematic even if they meant well.

Indigo- “The best way to be supportive of your friend and to be an ally if they tell you this, is to be accepting and to be proud. It shows that your friendship is strong and that nothing has changed.”

As an activity, we looked at the concept of masks; many people felt that they could not be their true selves and so they hid behind a masks - they could not be their true selves. In Year 6, we flipped this concept on its head by expressing that everyone is welcome on our masks. We looked at the meanings of the colours used in the pride flag and included the colours that we felt represented us the most and used them for our masks.

Sports Day

Huge congratulations to everyone for their enthusiasm and hard work this week during the Sports Days for years 2,3,4 and 5. The competitive and supportive atmosphere was exciting to see, especially how we were all so encouraging to everyone having an opportunity to race.  It was brilliant to see all the children getting involved.

Also, thank you to Year 6 for helping with the Year 2 and 3 events and to all the parents who came to encourage the children on the day.
